Brage Simonsen Sæbøe, Trainee Hydro Power Business Development

“Working in renewable energy allows me to use my skills for a greater cause, contributing to the planet's well-being.”

Why did you choose the Statkraft International Trainee Programme?

As a child, I dreamed of becoming an astronaut, fascinated by outer space, natural sciences, and space rockets. Although I didn’t become an astronaut, my passion for natural sciences and technology led me to pursue engineering.

Working in the renewable energy business allows me to use my skills for a greater cause, contributing to the planet's well-being. I chose Statkraft’s International Trainee Programme to meet bright, ambitious, and talented people, and I have certainly found them. Additionally, I wanted to see how renewables work in practice, and Statkraft has provided that opportunity.

Tell us about your trainee experience so far!

Each day is different—one day, I might be in the Oslo office working on developing a hydro power plant project, and the next day, I’m on-site at a power plant, experiencing the heavy lifting of replacing turbines and contribute to actual hands-on work. The variety keeps things exciting and challenging.

An example of a typical day could look like this: It starts in the morning at a power plant, where I meet contractors and colleagues to discuss safety risks and how to mitigate them. We then begin our work, monitoring progress and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Collaboration is a big part of it.

The most surprising thing I've learned is the immense impact Statkraft can make globally, despite being from a small country like Norway.

What would you say to a friend who was interested in the programme?

Apply to Statkraft's trainee programme—it's an amazing opportunity to learn about renewable energies, meet like-minded people, and be part of something impactful.

The best part for me of being a trainee at Statkraft is the wide range of opportunities. You get to visit power plants, attend seminars and presentations, and everyone is incredibly welcoming. They are eager to teach and involve you in their projects, providing a wealth of knowledge and experience.

I believe the future of renewable energy will be a mix of solutions and technologies. It's not just about the tech we already have but finding smart solutions for utilizing these technologies effectively. That's the real challenge and why you should get into renewable energies.
